Busy Day

April 23rd, 2008

I haven’t had time to post today! I’m working on a couple of articles, but would like your input. I would like to have a section of rescue stories; just one paragraph or so about the dog, cat, or other animal you saved and where they are now.

My first cat, Fellini, was a New York City alley cat I adopted from Animal Control. He never lost touch with his roots. To this day he trusts very few, swats, bites, growls, fights…most everyone but me. But he also curls up on your lap once he knows you, and if he decides he likes you. He makes his decision immediately upon your entrance and his reception of you almost never changes no matter how many times you come over or years go by. My mom tried to woo him with fresh shrimp. He gratefully accepted then jumped up on the refrigerator and started swatting and spitting. But he also curls up my husband’s laps, and gives me kisses. He provides great stories with his antics and has a look to him that is eerily human.

Another sad case - Needs surgery and your help

April 22nd, 2008

chocolate.jpgFrom the rescuer:
We all know there are so many dogs in need and I know we all try to help each and everyone of them! So, in the vein of kindness and compassion, PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN!

This BRAVE BOY “THOMAS” is sweet and gentle even though some sick **** stomped his genitals. He’s on a waiting list for a Lab Rescue but we’re not sure how long that might take. The vet advises IMMEDIATE SURGERY and has assured us Thomas will be fine once the surgery is performed.

WE ARE ONLY VOLUNTEERS and do NOT have the funds ourselves without your assistance - PLEASE HELP! EVEN A DOLLAR WILL BE PUT TO GOOD USE - THOMAS IS AN AWESOME BOY.

Please send any donation to:
Adams County Animal Shelter, 3910 Wismann Lane, Quincy, IL 62305
217-222-2133 - and tell them it’s for “THOMAS”!

Please read Warden Jen’s description of THOMAS below!

If you can help rescue or foster this SWEET boy after surgery, please contact Anne Heckle at ausiersq@dstream.net or 217-257-1322.

Anne,

I picked this boy up on the side of a road where he had sat for two days in the same spot, I figured he was waiting for his owner to return. Who I also think is the one that has kicked him in his testicles and penis, the vet at county wants to go in and drain the blood pockets and assess the damage inside, he says he will give you a discount and the costs to do this for the choc lab would run around $150 -$175 to try and repair the damage . This boy is well worth it!!!! You could never tell the pain he must be enduring from this, he is still very laid back. When Dr. Koch felt around on his private parts he didn’t move a muscle. They can get him in to surgery on Wednesday so I need to know what to tell them ASAP. I am picking up the bill on his depo shots so don’t worry about that. Please advise what ever help you can give. Thank you .

This boy is at the county’s animal control. He is a stray and yesterday the warden told me that some woman was beating him and an officer arrested her and took her to jail (on an outstanding arrest warrant). At no point did this boy react aggressively towards her, the officer, or the animal control warden. He is about 85 pounds, rot/german shepard. Maybe about 2-3 years old, intact, seems fine with other dogs too. He has until this weekend to be reclaimed. He is a big teddy bear! Please if you can save him email me at Sadeghi@mchsi.com.

PETA to offer $1 million for 1st viable artificial meat

April 21st, 2008

By John Schwartz | New York Times

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants to pay a million dollars for fake meat—even if it has caused a “near civil war” within the organization.

The group said it would announce plans on Monday for a $1 million prize to the “first person to come up with a method to produce commercially viable quantities of in vitro meat at competitive prices by 2012.”

The idea of getting the next Chicken McNugget out of a test tube is not new. For several years, scientists have worked to develop technologies to grow tissue cultures that could be consumed like meat without the expense of land or feed and the disease potential of real meat.

I’m not sure how I feel about this, being completely uneducated on the topic. I never thought of “growing” meat. Essentially, they create flesh in a lab without making an actual animal. They tout it as a controlled environment where external variables won’t taint the “meat” and it can be made more nutritious. As well, an animal will not have to die. I’m all for not killing animals. But aren’t there enough products out there that fulfill the nutritional requirements for vegetarians, without resorting to this? Even without supplemental products, a nutritious diet of beans, nuts, grains, fresh fruits/veggies should fulfill your daily needs. If PETA preaches vegetarian/veganism as the healthier lifestyle, why would they want to put money toward creating edible flesh? It’s contradictory to their mission and I’m disappointed in their decision.

Personally, even if I ate or couldn’t “go without” meat, I would be too nauseated to try this. Someone today told me this “viable meat” looks like a meat fruit rollup. Not sure if that’s true but the visual I get is of some tripe (pic below) I saw once at a deli counter. Ick and ugh.
