Tossed from a bridge, hit by a car, still wagging their tails and giving kisses
Please read the previous entry for info on where this came from.
These dogs are extreme examples of unconditional love and trust. They are in pounds with limited time to be rescued, so if you are interested, contact me. There are emails out to the shelter chain, so hopefully we’ll hear something good soon. And I cannot stress enough that what I write here is not ever exaggerated for effect.
First are 3 lab/sharpei mix puppies, about 3 months old, 2 boys, 1 girl. They were dumped on a bridge that connects Illinois and Iowa. Animal control said they were either trying to throw them off, or dumping them into Illinois. They said they are very friendly, outgoing and give lots of love. Now they are in a concrete cell until a rescue can be found, or they are euthanized.
Below, this buddy was obviously abused and neglected before he was then hit by a car and picked up by animal control. The officer wrote:
“OK I am just sick to my stomach about this sweet boy…I will never understand how people can treat an animal this sweet so bad. I got a call today that this boy had been hit by a car and ran in to an old run down trailer. When I got there, he stuck his head out from underneath the trailer scared to death. I threw him a treat and he devoured that, so I opened a pouch of cat food (the real stinky kind) and he came out wagging his tail. He was very eager to jump in my truck to get out of the cold. When I took him to my vet he thought he had been hit (abused ) not very long ago, the wounds on his side and head are scabbed over and healing. He has a gash on his leg… When I took him to the hospital room he had to greet all the boarders and give them nose kisses, wagging his tail. I sat on the floor to open his kennel door and he came over and sat on my lap licking me to death as to say thank you for saving my life. He was happy to see every body at the clinic and get all the attention he very much deserves. Please see if you can find this very sweet boy a good place, so he can live a healthy well loved life, he has earned it. Thank you.”

Well, here is what I get everyday in my inbox. A couple of women from Central Illinois rescue dogs and cats from pounds that give them 5 days to be reclaimed or are euthanized. Animals that are voluntarily given up can be euthanized immediately. These women have taken it upon themselves to set up an email chain to shelters all over the midwest. I help push some of those emails out and organize responses and info when necessary (pretty easy stuff on my end). They have also organized a small group of people for a transport chain, and are always looking for more! I will have stories about and from these 2 someday soon. They deserve the utmost respect and commendation for what they deal with every single day - the abandonment and abuse of perfectly wonderful animals that are then on death row. They have a very limited amount of time to be saved. I can barely stand the emails, let alone being face-to-face and interacting with these babies. Next will be a couple of the stories from just today.

A fellow rescuer and I went to New Orleans the October after Katrina. I’ve decided to share the journal I kept while there, in parts.
These little buddies are a couple of the cats that came back with us and are still waiting for homes at Tree House Animal Foundation.
Kudzu is a DSH tabby and white kitty who came to Treehouse from New Orleans with his sister, Bonnabelle (who was adopted). Kudzu is a shy boy who will need a patient and loving home. He does well with other kitties and enjoys playing. However, he needs a little more time to trust people due to his experiences before coming to Treehouse.
Bogalusa is an orange tabby and white kitty. He is our heroic survivor, rescued after Hurricane Katrina. Bogalusa is a little unsure of new situations and new people, but once adjusted is an extremely sweet, mellow, and loving cat. He has a very gentle personality and will shine with some extra love and attention. Bogalusa has tested positive for the virus causing FIV, but is currently without any symptoms of illness. *Feline Immunodeficiency Virus is a serious but manageable viral infection that is not transferable to humans. Tree House staff can help answer your questions to see if a FIV cat is the right choice for you! FIV cats adopted from Tree House are eligible for additional health care benefits.

This little guy is at a local no-kill shelter in Naperville; so he’s safe, but not home. I volunteered there briefly about 6 months ago. Jeffy was there then and I don’t understand why he is still without a family. My stepson and I went one Saturday to play one-on-one with some of the dogs. It gets them out of their cages and they can let loose. We took Jeffy, though he wasn’t the cutest or one that caught my eye. When volunteering, you have your favorites, but you try to be fair to everyone. So we took him to a fenced area and, oh my he was FUNNY! I fell in love with him almost immediately and he quickly made it toward the top of my list. I’m more partial to larger dogs, though I love them all. But he has so much personality he seems big. He hopped around and kissed us and ran circles. He was absolutely ecstatic. I went back the next week and took him for a walk. He literally hops because he’s so happy and excited. I fell in love all the more. He is so sweet and happy and loves everyone. He would make a wonderful companion. Here’s what ADOPT says on their website (along with the link to his page). While you’re at it, take a look at all of the other dogs and cats there. This is almost entirely volunteer run, though you would think there was a large, full-time staff with how well it operates.

“Jeffy is a happy boy with a high energy level and loves to just run and play He came to ADOPT as a stray that was picked up from another rescue. Jeffy is currently in a foster home and does well the other dog who is more laid back. He is not completely housebroken, so will need some training. Jeffy does love to be around people and needs a good amount of attention. We think the ideal home for Jeffy would be where someone was home at least part time to give him the structure and consistency he needs. He is just a wonderful boy who needs a family that can make a commitment to him.”

This is a blog dedicated to animals; narratives and pictures of my own menagerie (2 dogs, 3 cats) and from out in the field of rescue. One of my goals is to post at least 1 animal a day from the rescues I work with, and to help them find homes. These dogs and cats, puppies and kittens, are all on the brink of euthanasia due to being strays or turned in to animal control by their own “families.” They are all deemed adoptable. OK, more than adoptable. Downright awesome. It’s unbelievable how many wonderful beings pass through daily. It is unfathomable to me the numbers that are put to death daily for no reason other than overpopulation and a lack of space.
I will share these stories with you from myself and those I work with. I will share the good and the bad. I hope to bring some enlightenment to the world about the plight of animals in general, and specifically these domesticated ones.
Essentially, I want to do more. I feel very limited in how much I can do for these animals due to a full-time job, a husband, and my own menagerie needing my presence. So, this is an additional resource and hopefully can gain some recognition out of the millions of blogs out there. Not so that I can receive attention, but so that the animals can. I want to help save lives through awareness as much as physical effort.
